A UK court banned the travel of a two years old baby girl to India as she was under risk of genital mutilation procedure. The court ruled on March 5 that child is at risk because cultural and religious pressure had overridden her mother’s maternal instinct.
Female Genital Mutation (Female circumcision) is the action or traditional practice of cutting off the clitoris and sometimes the labia of girls or young women. This surgery robs girls of the possibility for sexual satisfaction. It is believed to be a way of ensuring virginity and chastity and is used as a tool to ban girls from sex outside marriage and from having sexual feelings.

The court was informed that the Indian origin baby’s three elder sisters had already been taken to India to carry out circumcision. The judge gave protection order saying that the youngest girl was also under risk and needed protection. In UK, female genital mutilation is barred by law and the parents can be blocked from taking their children abroad and passports can be forfeited and face prosecution if they breach it.

Although FGM is practiced by many communities, it is most often claimed to be carried out in accordance with religious beliefs.
